A passion for the land and the environment is combined in Janet Gregory’s role for the NZ Landcare Trust where she works with farmers, rural communities and sector groups to tackle land and water issues.

Her upbringing on her family’s Taieri sheep, beef and arable farm instigated a love for the land and animals and she still has the remnants of her families Border Leicester stud flock she inherited from her uncle which originated five generations ago.

Janet originally trained as a Forest Ranger with the NZ Forest Service where she gained an interest in forestry and love for the native environment while living in many different areas of NZ. It also introduced her to her husband Steve.

Her start with the NZ Landcare Trust came as a coordinator for the Biodiversity Southland forum working with agencies which had an interest in biodiversity, and working with farmers to gain funding to help them manage and protect biodiversity on their land. More than 14 years later the job had evolved to help farmers tackle the issues around land management and helping develop catchment groups so that farmers and stakeholders can work together to share their knowledge, improve land management that impacts on water quality and build resilience into rural communities. In 2017 a shift to Canterbury as Regional Coordinator and South Island Team Leader has seen her continue her work with farmers and sector groups on implementing good management practices and helping communities on catchment issues. The importance of working with people, and her love of the land and the environment still drives her.
