NZ Landcare Trust's Hooked on Native Fish Fish Fact Sheets are a fully bi-lingual resource, with both Te Reo and English versions of all the sheets available for download from this page.

This project successfully raised awareness of our unique native fish and helped identify what farmers and city dwellers can do to protect and enhance their local streams, both rural and urban. It was funded by the Sustainable Management Fund with support from Whaingaroa Harbourcare, Tui 2000, Hamilton City Council, Waikato Tainui, Environment Waikato (now Waikato Regional Council), Boffa Miskell and the Department of Conservation.

Focusing on native fish also means caring for catchments. Streams form natural drainage systems and their condition reflects the health of the surrounding catchment. During the project, workshops in Whaingaroa Harbour (Raglan) and Hamilton City demonstrated practical activities which benefited streams and the surrounding land. A series of informative fact sheets were produced as an additional useful resource for landowners, schools and the wider community, with the first fact sheet also available in Te Reo Māori.

The Fish Fact Sheets were printed with the support of WRC’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, and due to popular demand, further funding was sought from Mā Te Reo to translate the remaining five fact sheets and to print more copies, which have all been distributed now.

What do Hamiltonians know about their local stream?

In 2008, the NZ Landcare Trust was contracted by Hamilton City Council and Environment Waikato to carry out a survey of residents with properties bordering the city’s five major streams. The first fact sheet 'Our Freshwater Fish', looks at the different native species available in New Zealand, where they live and what can be done to protect them. The second and third sheets explore the diverse habitats enjoyed by native fish and looks in more detail at what can be done to help them thrive. The final three fact sheets consider stream management in urban and rural situations as well as broader issues associated with catchment management.

Hooked on Native Fish

In 2017, the Science Learning Hub (SLH) expanded our Hooked on Fish fact sheets into an interactive on-line resource aimed at teachers and students. The main focus for the SLH is our native freshwater fish and stream restoration. You can learn about our enigmatic freshwater fish and how we can help restore their habitats to ensure they thrive.

The Science Learning Hub is developed by educators and teachers in collaboration with New Zealand scientists to provide resources for teachers of school years 2-10. It is funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and managed by the University of Waikato.

The Science Learning Hub uses a range of media to tell the stories of New Zealand research and development. Wrap-around teacher resources demonstrate how these stories can be used as contexts for creating relevant, engaging classroom programmes.
