Welcome A-Board Kevin

Welcome A-Board Kevin

10 July 2018

The NZ Landcare Trust has welcomed it newest trustee to its board – Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society of New Zealand CEO Kevin Hague.

Replacing former Forest & Bird representative Jon Wenham who gave many years of dedication and service to the board, Kevin is looking forward to contributing to the governance of the Trust.

“Forest & Bird has had a long association with NZ Landcare Trust and really appreciates the wonderful work it has been undertaking to protect and restore river catchments. We also recognise the crucial role NZ Landcare Trust has been playing as a facilitator of relationships between farmers and environmentalists,” Kevin says.

“We felt that it would be an important signal of Forest & Bird’s understanding of the Trust’s pivotal role to be represented at the most senior level. Through being represented by the Chief Executive, Forest & Bird can also better find synergies between its own work programme and that of the Trust.”

Hailing from Greymouth on the South Island’s West Coast, Kevin joined Forest & Bird as Chief Executive in October 2016. He has held leadership roles in business, and in the Government and community sectors. Before joining Forest & Bird Kevin served as a Member of Parliament for eight years, and was previously Executive Director of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation and Chief Executive of the West Coast District Health Board.

Kevin has also been extensively involved in various human rights issues and has a strong commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi. A previous member of the West Coast Tai Poutini Conservation Board, Kevin has also been involved in conservation advocacy and campaigning, as well as practical conservation work of planting and pest control. Outside of work, he is also a mountain biker and tramper.

Dr Nick Edgar, CEO of NZ Landcare Trust would like to acknowledge the support and commitment of outgoing trustee Jon Wenham.

“Jon has been a great advocate both for the work of Forest and Bird and for the Trust. Jon has been on our board for the past six years and brought with him a deep understanding of conservation issues both regionally and nationally. It has been a real pleasure working with him.”

“I look forward to Kevin joining our board and bringing a wealth of environmental knowledge and his leadership abilities to support our organisation into the future,” Nick says.

*Other organisations represented on the NZ Landcare Trust board are Federated Farmers; Rural Women New Zealand; Federation of Maori Authorities; Fish & Game and Federated Mountain Clubs.
