Community-led Catchment Groups map goes live!

NZ Landcare Trust supporting groups across more than 5.8 million hectares of land.

After several months of behind the scenes construction, NZ Landcare Trust is proud to present its National Community-led Catchment Groups map. This map highlights all of the groups that NZ Landcare Trust is supporting and assisting to achieve great outcomes for communities, freshwater and so much more.

Some amazing statistics have been able to be produced as a result of this map. As of October 2019, NZ Landcare Trust is supporting groups across 5.8 million hectares – which amounts to over 21 percent of New Zealand’s landmass.

The bottom of the South Island are currently the leaders in community-led catchments, with 55 percent of Otago region and 51 percent of Southland region covered by groups.

This map has been created by NZ Landcare Trusts resident GIS expert and Manawatu/Whanganui Regional coordinator Alastair Cole.

NZ Landcare Trust CEO, Dr Nick Edgar, says the map is a huge success for the Trust and comes after a lot of intricate work.

"The work that has gone into this map has been huge. We are sure it is the first, or one of the first, of its kind to be produced and it has taken a lot of work by Alastair to get it to this point. This is a growing and moving document – we will aim to keep it as up to date as we can based on the information we are provided by our groups.”

“This map is also a product of the hard work by our team, who work with catchment groups across the country. Our coverage of those regions has increased remarkably and will continue to do so. This is what we are about – sustainable land and water management through community engagement.”
