What is ACRE?

Agricultural Communities Respecting the Environment

Our mission:

To pursue excellence and promote solutions in the landscape
Initiated & driven by farmers, for a community of stakeholders.

About ACRE:

ACRE was initiated by farmers from the Horizons region, who are passionate about respecting and caring for the environment, land and resources that they are stewards of.

This community of farmers from a range of different primary sectors wanted to create a forum where they could learn from, support, encourage and challenge each other with regard to being stewards of the landscape. These farmers also wanted to engage the wider community and general public by inviting them to join in on some projects—actively working together for positive and constructive outcomes in the landscape.

Topics of ACRE include (but are not limited to) land, water, soils, carbon, nutrients, flora, and fauna regarding the landscape and farming systems. It is important to farmers that conversation, analysis and decision making considers not just the environment, but also social and economic implications. This helps to confidently create solutions for enhancing and managing the natural resources on farms and in the wider landscape.

Who is involved?

ACRE is funded by farmer members paying an annual subscription ($200/yr), with the support also of DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, AgFirst, NZ Landcare Trust and Horizons Regional Council.

Other stakeholders include the farming industry, the wider community, scientists, academics, schools, government, and NGO’s.
