08.03.10: Flood of interest for 4th Wetland Symposium.

More than 200 attendees enjoyed the latest National Wetland Symposium held in Rotorua (March 3-5). The event was jointly hosted by the National Wetland Trust (NWT) and The Bay of Plenty Wetland Forum.

This year’s symposium was designed as a training and networking opportunity for landowners, iwi, people committed to wetland restoration, policy makers and wetland scientists from all over New Zealand. The event began with a day-long introduction to the diverse wetlands of the Bay of Plenty region followed by two days of presentations, practical demonstrations and a soap box forum for the wider community to share their views.

Highlights included the launch of a publication entitled 'Wetland Restoration: A Handbook for New Zealand Freshwater Systems' . All available copies were snapped up by eager attendees. Further copies are due to be printed shortly and will be available for purchase. More information available here>

NZ Landcare Trust (NZLT) has a long term position on the NWT board of trustees and Regional Coordinator Monica Peters took an active role organising the event and played a key editorial role in the development of the Wetland Restoration Handbook. Monica also delivered a presentation entitled Going for Gold: creative solutions to finding funding.

The high number of participants underlined the growing popularity of this biennial event, which is due to move to Invercargill for 2012.
