Motueka Awa Ora

There are many people and groups working along the Motueka River and its tributaries.  In December 2017 a Hui called 'Gathering of the River people' was run where  groups talked about what they were doing along the river.

Groups included:

  • Tapawera Awa Ora who are planting along the river
  • Farmers who are supporting groups through giving access and doing their own planting and weed control
  • Landowners with QE11 covenants who are developing wetlands and battling with wilding pine
  • Motueka Weed busters in a war with OMB in QE11 covenants along the Motueka Valley
  • Tasman District Council with flood, planting and monitoring and ecological activities
  • Tasman Environmental Trust who are supporting a trapping group
  • DOC fighting weeds along the Sherry River
  • Fish and Game who fish and monitor fish numbers and log water temperatures
  • Nelson Trout Fishing Club
  • Experiencing Marine Reserves/Whitebait Connection who are working with the estuaries

From the meeting it was decided to form 'Motueka Awa Ora' in order to:

  • Create a common vision and common goals for the Motueka River and its subsidiaries
  • Coordinate activities and become more efficient by working together
  • Share learning's and information (through Google drive, Facebook and this Project page)
  • Have a meeting time table (working meetings)
  • Look for joint funding opportunities

We would love to hear from people working along the Motueka Awa Ora.

Please post photos of what you are doing along the river or your favourite photos of the river on our facebook page (address tbc).
