In the Waikato, a wide range of individuals, groups and organisations work in partnership to restore some of the region’s precious remaining wetlands – over 90% nation-wide have already been lost to land development. NZ Landcare Trust maintains a strong networking role, ensuring that landowners and community groups get useful information about managing land sustainably and enhancing indigenous biodiversity. Creating useful links between groups, agencies and scientists – typically takes a variety of forms; one-one communication with a landowner, setting up an informal evening where ideas can be shared and expert advice sought, a day-long workshop with field trip to provide a broader context for what wetland restoration entails. Landcare staff aren’t adverse to mucking in: staff join in on planting days too!
