Community biodiversity restoration schemes can gain financial support from a variety of sources. This page contains a list of the key funding bodies (listed in alphabetical order) supporting work in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Afforestation schemes


Funds for planting exotic or native vegetation for carbon sinks (min area 5 ha). Administered by Waikato Regional Council.


Biodiversity Condition Fund

(replaced by two new funds)

To improve and maintain areas of native vegetation, species and habitats (including wetlands and other freshwater ecosystems), e.g. fencing, weed control, restoration planting or pest control. Administered by the Department of Conservation.



BOC Where there’s Water grants


Funding to help the community understand, maintain, protect and improve their water environment. Administered by NZ Water Association.

Community Environment Fund


Projects supported will empower the community to take practical action to improve environmental quality. Aimed at partnerships between community groups and support agencies. Administered by the Ministry for the Environment.


Environmental Initiatives Fund


To assist organisations, agencies and individuals with environmental projects. One-off grants for projects which directly enhance or benefit the natural environment. Administered by Environment Waikato.


Kids Restore NZ


Funding for schools that wish to engage in and lead community restoration projects. Covers costs such as materials and transport to get the kids to the restoration site. Administered by Air NZ Environment Trust.


Lottery Environment and Heritage Fund

Funds clearly specified one off projects which seek to promote, protect and conserve New Zealand's indigenous flora and fauna. Priority is given to projects which involve: conservation of indigenous flora and fauna, identification and conservation of critical habitats and ecosystems, conservation of rare, endangered or threatened species in their natural habitat and enhancement of public education and awareness of issues affecting indigenous flora and fauna.


Honda Tree Fund


Funding for planting native trees donated by Honda. Administered via your regional council.


Matamata-Piako District Significant Natural Features Fund



Landowners with a significant site such as a wetland and/or native bush area can apply for rates remission and/or funding towards fencing the site and project costs              


Nature Heritage Fund



Contestable fund for projects that protect ecosystems on private land by direct purchase or covenant. Administered by the Department of Conservation

Nga Whenua Rahui


Funding to protect natural areas on Maori land. Administered by the Department of Conservation.


NZ Game Bird Habitat Trust


Funding for the development and enhancement of habitat for the benefit of game birds and other wetland inhabitants. Administered by Fish & Game NZ


Small Scale Community Initiative Fund


Small grants to help out with pest control. Administered by Waikato Regional Council, contact them for information.

South Waikato


Initiatives Fund


Distributes money to landowners in the South Waikato District who would like to fence or plant up waterways or wetlands on their farm. Administered by a committee. Ask the South Waikato District Council about funding assistance with legal protection of bush and wetland areas on your farm.


Sustainable Farming Fund


Grants for collaborative research/ demonstration projects that deliver benefits to our primary industries. Requires matching funds from the parties. Administered by MaF.


Transpower Community Care Fund


One-off grants for projects to community groups in areas along the existing National Grid route, as well as communities affected by new Transpower projects. Administered by Transpower.


Waikato Community Conservation Fund


Assistance for non-profit community groups undertaking projects or activities that will benefit conservation within the boundaries of Waikato Conservancy. Administered by Department of Conservation (Waikato Conservancy).



Waste Minimisation Fund


Helps fund waste minimisation projects. Administered by the Ministry for the Environment.


Waikato River Authority Clean up Trust  Fund

The Authority is able to distribute funds each year for projects that will improve the health and well­being of the river


WWF Habitat Protection Fund



Funds local community conservation groups engaged in hands-on ecological restoration or conservation. Administered by WWF.
