Success at Nelson Tasman Environmental Awards.

The 2009 Nelson Tasman Environmental Awards were presented in a ceremony at Woollaston Estate in Mahana on 20th November. A total of 87 entries were received and groups supported by NZ Landcare Trust were amongst the winners.

The Aorere Catchment Group won the award for the Rural section. Their excellent work has attracted national attention, with dairy farmers taking the lead, initiating work that has resulted in improved water quality in the Aorere River. This in turn has increased harvesting opportunities for the aquaculture industry and helped bring together a community. (Aorere Project page>)

The Sherry River Catchment Group were equal winners in the Community and Neighborhood Groups section. This catchment group have been working to improve water quality within the Sherry River catchment, a 7800 hectare sub-catchment in the upper reaches of the Motueka River near Nelson, where improvements in farming practice have led to significant improvements in water quality. Ross Patchings, a Golden Bay farmer was acknowledged for his work to improve dairy effluent management, through the installation of 'Weeping Wall' systems. His work earnt a Highly Commended in the Rural section.

It is so encouraging to learn about all the good environmental practices that are happening throughout our region. These awards allow us to celebrate their work and inspire others.
