Resilient Farmer is Now a Book

(Published on 29th August 2017)

The story of Doug Avery and his journey from a depressed farmer running a failing drought prone hill-country farm, to a rejuvenated leader of a thriving farm business, with a passion for helping others, is now available as a book.

To many in the rural community Doug is already an inspiration - a kiwi farmer who has publicly shared his experiences overcoming mental illness, through a series of revealing talks, radio interviews and media stories. His new book entitled 'The Resilient Farmer: Weathering the challenges of life and the land' provides further insight into the challenging journey that Doug and his family have been on and provides advice on how to get through the mental hurdles that are sometimes associated with the isolating and unpredictable rural sector.

Not only does the book reflect upon Doug's own story of survival but it also to serves to increase wider awareness of the challenges of rural isolation and encourages others who find themselves in a difficult situation to acknowledge their problems and find someone to talk to.

Doug's work with NZ Landcare Trust on the Starborough/Flaxbourne Soil Conservation project prompted him to adapt his farm management systems in order to drought-proof his farm. As a result the environmental and financial viability of the land was transformed. Following this success he was invited to address audiences around New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, where he shared information about sustainable farming systems that also provide a platform for environmental protection and financial growth.

Doug has served as Chairman of the Starborough/Flaxbourne Soil Conservation Group, which attracted recognition as an NZ Landcare Trust Landcare Ambassador. Doug has also received a number of other accolades for his work in sustainable land management including winning the South Island Farmer of the Year competition and Landcorp Agricultural Communicator of the Year.

'The Resilient Farmer: Weathering the challenges of life and the land' is available in all good book stores as well as through online book sellers.
