Landcare Groups Harness the Potential of Web Technology.

Many new technologies are now within easy reach of community groups. This has been brilliantly illustrated by the Whangarei Heads Landcare Forum (WHLF) who recently launched an excellent website as part of their Backyard Kiwi campaign.

The main aim of the website is to act as a focal point for the campaign and increase local engagement. Keeping the local community fully informed will help ensure they support the various projects linked to the forum. This might be as straight forward as keeping dogs under control or looking out for kiwi on the roads, so they don’t get run over. Alternatively people may wish to take a more active role, joining one of the Landcare Groups and helping with native planting or weed and pest control.

Another goal for the website is to share the experiences of working and living with kiwi. These amazing birds evoke great passion amongst those fortunate enough to encounter them. “It is a very special feeling knowing that kiwi live in your backyard, and we want to share that with others”.

The logo for the campaign was created by local illustrator and designer Heather Hunt, who worked with local kiwi expert Todd Hamilton. Heather states, “it [the logo design] combines humour and integrity with Todd’s exacting and intimate knowledge about ‘real kiwi’.”

Launched in March, the website has been very well received, attracting visitors from all over the world. The website can be accessed directly from the link below:
