A Winner’s Field Day

Stewardship, sustainability and a focus on the environment gained Hinuera farmers Rod and Sandra McKinnon the top award at the Ballance Waikato Farm Environment Awards recently – and they had a chance to display their winning ways at their farm field day in May.

NZ Landcare Trust Chief Executive Dr Nick Edgar attended the recent field day on May 10 and really appreciated what he saw on the farm, based near Matamata.

“Rod and Sandra McKinnon have a fantastic farming operation at Oakstone in Hinuera. Clearly sustainability has been a driving force in the way they have shaped their farm and farming practices.  It was pleasing to see the passion this couple have and the way they have embraced good management practices to protect and restore their farm waterways, riparian areas and wetlands.”

“They have combined technology with determination and hard work to reduce their nutrient footprint whilst maintaining a thriving profitable business model”.

In other award news, our Nelson/Marlborough Regional Coordinator Annette Litherland attended the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association Awards in Nelson on May 7 to present the NZ Landcare Trust Award for Innovation in Sustainable Farm Forestry. The award was presented to Ken and Robyn Ferguson. Congratulations from the NZ Landcare Trust team.
